Owner Recommendations - Winter Activities

Snow Skiing

Skiing from Moose Back Lodge is so easy! All you have to do is get dressed, call the shuttle (phone number is on the inside of an upper kitchen cabinet in both homes) and the shuttle shows up within 10 minutes right at your front door! The shuttle takes you directly to the Arrowhead lift about 3 minutes away. There you can rent skis, ski boots, and purchase lift tickets. The shuttle is FREE.

The Arrowhead mountain is so nice you might spend one day just skiing Arrowhead as we often do. It's very family friendly, and still has some nice difficult blues to get excited about. At the bottom of the lift, there is a great new restaurant/bar. You really should eat there at least once. The food is great and served cafeteria style so you get it quick and the kids can help themselves. The bar serves great drinks, and you can enjoy them sitting at one of the two beautiful firepits right outside the restaurant. Or, eat outside on one of the many park benches and watch the skiers!

If you want to ski Beaver Creek, just go up the Arrowhead lift, and follow the signs to Beaver Creek. The same goes for Bachelor Gulch. Both are very easy to access from the Arrowhead lift. Then at the end of the day, just ski right back to Arrowhead. The shuttle comes by about every 10 minutes. And once again it is FREE and will drop you off right at the front door of Moose Back Lodge.

We like to ski down to Bachelor Gulch and have a Buffalo Burger outside the Ritz and watch the skiers. We always end up at the restaurant at the base of the Arrowhead lift, and have an après ski drink. It's a nice way to wind down the day before heading home. Arrowhead is very kid friendly so your kids will feel comfortable running around, and you won’t have to worry about them bothering others.

Ice Skating

In Beaver Creek Village the Ice Skating Rink is open year round. In the summer months it is only open at night, but in the winter months you can ice skate during the day. You can rent skates as well. It's right in front of the Hyatt. There is public parking in Beaver Creek that leads you right to the middle of the village where the ice skating rink is. We like to get a hot chocolate, and watch the kids ice skate.

Avon Swimming

If you are tired of the snow, Avon has a great community center with a large pool, water slides, and a lazy river. For a small fee you can take the kids there for the day. Avon Recreation Center http://avon.org/reccenter.cfm

Sledding next to the house!

Both our lodges have sleds in the garage. Our kids love to sled down the hill next to our house. They build sledding trails, sled, build snowmen etc. It's great to have that right out your bedroom window so you can watch them while you relax by the fire! Tell the kids to be careful of the trees and to stop before they get to the driveway so they won’t get hurt.

Adventure Ridge at Lions Head

It doesn't open until 2:00 PM, but it is so worth the trip! It's called Adventure Ridge and if you drive just past Vail on Highway 70 and then park in the Lions Head parking lot, walk to the Gondola, and take the Gondola up (don’t need to have skis), you land at Adventure Ridge. There is a restaurant there and a bar, trampolines, laser gun games inside, and another nice restaurant next to the laser tag. They also have miniature snow mobiles that the kids can drive! They are smaller and the kids race them around a track. They also have tubing, and adult snow mobiling. Each of these things cost money, and you can get your tickets at the main building with the restaurant in it.

Drinks and smores at the Hyatt

We love to end up at the Hyatt in Beaver Creek some days and have smores and drinks around the big fire pits outside. You buy the smores “kits” in the hotel’s candy store, and then use the smores sticks that are available next to the fire pits. They do have drink service outside, so just look for a waitress and sit and relax. If you decide to sit inside, the huge windows in the Hyatt are one of my favorite views of the Beaver Creek mountains. Try some of their great appetizers like spicy tuna roll, shrimp, and excellent homemade potato chips for snacking with a cocktail.

Spa at the Hyatt

Spoil yourself one day and reserve a spa treatment at the Hyatt. Their spa is our favorite. If you get your valet ticket stamped at the spa you don’t have to pay for parking.

Movies in Edwards

There is a cute little movie theatre in Edwards that has about 4 theatres. We love to go there after walking around Edwards, and eating out. Check on times because most movies don’t start until 3:00 PM. Eat at the Main Street Grill right across the street beforehand for a great meal and walk to the theatre.

Shopping in Edwards and Beaver Creek

You really can’t go home before spending a day shopping in Edwards and/or Beaver Creek Village. Edwards is more "quaint" and a little less expensive. But, both villages are fun to shop in. And both have excellent boutiques and ski shops. Parking is pretty easy in Edwards, in Beaver Creek just follow the signs to public parking.

In Edwards there is a Starbucks and some great restaurants; one of our favorites for casual dining there during the day and at night is The Main Street Grill. It's casual and you can see the river from the balcony. They have great soups, salads, and creative entrees.

Grocery Shopping and Liquor Store

If you go into Avon you can get anything you need at the City Market. It is large and the prices are good. If you want something fun/different/health foods you can go to the Gourmet Market in Edwards. I love going there for small things and to stock up on great health food like granola, bakery items, and fresh soup or if I'm in a hurry. It is a little more expensive than the City Market in Avon, so keep that in mind. But it is a little closer if you’re in a hurry and the liquor store is right next door.

Kitchen Store

If you really need something to cook dinner with or to just look around, there is a great kitchen store in Edwards. It's on the main street just a few stores down from Main Street Grill. I love just going in there and looking around.
